ISDN Switch Off 2025 Stop Sell
The 5th September marks a huge milestone in the ISDN switch off, when the UK wide “stop sell” comes into force.
In 2025, the UK government has scheduled the discontinuation of ISDN and PSTN telecommunication networks.Referred to as the 'BT ISDN Switch Off', this initiative represents a significant transformation for businesses reliant on traditional phone systems.
Although the official ISDN switch-off is two years away, numerous regions have already transitioned into a “Stop Sell”phase. During this stage, access to Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) services, encompassing ISDN and analogue lines, will cease. WLR functions through the PSTN copper line network, which is scheduled for complete shutdown by December 2025.
The discontinuation of WLR products and services highlights the need to upgrade your existing telephone system sooner rather than later. Businesses that don’t prepare will face challenges over the coming months as their contracts are due for renewal and the “stop sell” takes effect.
What is the ISDN Switch Off?
The ISDN Switch Off, scheduled for 2025, marks the discontinuation of Integrated Services DigitalNetwork (ISDN) services by telecommunication providers. ISDN has been the backbone of communication for businesses, providing voice, data, and video transmission over digital lines. However, the technology is now considered outdated, and the industry is transitioning to newer, more efficient technologies such as IP-based solutions.
What is the ISDN Stop Sell?
Leading up to the ISDN Switch Off, telecommunication providers have implemented a"stop sell" policy. This means that starting from the 5th September, they will no longer accept new orders for ISDN connections orequipment. Essentially, businesses will no longer be able to purchase new ISDN lines or expand their existing ISDN infrastructure.
The impact on businesses:
The ISDN Switch Off and the "stop sell" policy will have an enormous impact on businesses that are still reliant on ISDN technology. Here are some key points to consider:
- It’s about more than just phone systems:
The ISDN switch off will not only affect your phone lines, but it’s also any technology that relies on analogue PSTN/ISDN connectivity, such as fax machines, alarms, door entry systems, card terminals, CCTV and lifts.
- Migration to IP-based solutions:
Businesses will need to migrate their telephony and communication systems to IP-based solutions, such as SIP (SessionInitiation Protocol) trunking or hosted Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)services. These modern alternatives offer greater flexibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Equipment replacement:
Along with transitioning to new services, businesses may need to replace their existing ISDN hardware with IP-compatible equipment. This can incur additional costs, so early planning and budgeting are essential.
- Improved communications:
Embracing IP-based solutions opens advanced features, such as video conferencing, instant messaging, and mobile integration, which can enhance productivity and collaboration within the organisation.
- Time-sensitive approach:
As the deadline approaches, businesses must act quickly to avoid any potential disruption to their communication services.Waiting until the last minute could lead to increased costs and complications in the migration process.
- Specific areas and dates for ISDN termination:
Whilst some regions have already gone through the stop sell phase, on the 5th September 2023 the UK wide “stop sell” on sales of new Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and related broadband ISP products will come into effect.
What are the alternatives to ISDN?
The "stop sell" policy is a clear signal that it's time to move on from ISDN and explore alternative solutions. Luckily, the market offers a range of technology that can cater to diverse business needs. Two of the most prominent alternatives to ISDN are SIP trunking and hosted VoIP services.
SIP trunking allows businesses to leverage their existingIP-based infrastructure while consolidating voice, data, and video services over a single network. This scalable and cost-effective solution enables seamless communication across multiple locations, enhancing collaboration and boosting productivity.
Hosted VoIP services provide businesses with a cloud-based communication system. This solution eliminates the need for on-site hardware maintenance and upgrades, reducing operational costs and simplifying management. Hosted VoIP also comes with a range of advanced features, such as virtual meetings, mobile integration, and voicemail-to-email, to optimise communication efficiency.
Whilst this transition may pose challenges for businesses still relying on ISDN, it also presents an ideal opportunity for growth and improvement.
Businesses should start planning their migration strategies now to ensure a smooth and seamless transition before the ISDN switch off. Talk to the ITDS Managed team to discuss your migration options: 0207 101 0096 or contact@itdsmanaged.com
